Out and About: Mass Exodus and FAT

Out and About 1

In the last couple weeks I had the pleasure of going to Mass Exodus and FAT (Toronto Alternative Fashion Week). Both showcased some lesser known designers which I hope to bring to light through our lovely web channel.

Some commentary:

Mass Exodus 2008 (Paramnesia) was something that I decided to go to based on a random invite from an elementary school friend, Janet (ENCHANTED), a graduating student from the Ryerson Fashion Design Program. Little did I know that her hard work and extreme talent would be showcased at the end of the event, closing off Mass Exodus 2008. The elaborate costume designs were not only lush and elegant, but elaborate and stunning, making a dramatic exit for the show.

I was on location for FAT twice last week, once volunteering for a short period of time stuffing bags (fashion and its abundance of glamour will do that), and also on a press pass on Friday. With great labels such as Armor, UsThemWe, and Krane, FAT brought Toronto talent to life.

Check out some random snaps that I got from these events.

Steve Madden ColourfulDear Readers,

I’m back! And maybe I can’t say better than ever, yet, but I’m certainly making strides towards getting there. My neurotic tendencies and my newly fixed Mac don’t seem to mix well together, but I’m certain that this website will improve.

Why? Well, a couple reasons:

  1. I’m going to invest time and money into this baby
  2. I got a job! And I’m so utterly content. I’m not going to make mention of the company, but I’m just going to say that it brings out my inner geeky and I love their orange culture.
  3. I’m going to be out and about, scouring retailers on and offline for some gorgeous clothing I can present to you fine viewers.

Other than that, thank you for being patient, and I hope to hear from you next post (which won’t be long from now).

Ps: PerezHilton.com posted this hilarious picture of a new shoe from Steve Madden. Isn’t it so hideous it makes you recoil? Love it!

Brit Vogue

It’s been a few years since I gave up reading American Vogue in favour of its British counterpart. Packed with more designer features, glossy fashion spreads, various interest pieces, and — get this — covers that actually feature models (but please excuse April’s cover star, Victoria Beckham), I’ve always found that British Vogue was worth paying twice the cost ($10). In their recent March 2008 edition with cover girl Kate Moss, besides a gorgeous dissection of Spring’s top trends (e.g. the return of the trophy jacket, art meets fashion, tie-dye, etc.) there was a poignant feature entitled “Love Stories.” Proving that exceptional writing can be found in — of all places — a fashion magazine, a favourite excerpt of mine from the article: “Obsessive Love: There is no road back and the bridges are forever burning. When the end comes, it is terrible and absolute because there can be nothing left – no friendship, no future.”

Rei Kawakubo for H&M!?

Rei Kawakubo

Wow… I never thought I’d see this day. Rei Kawakubo of Comme Des Garcons (CDG) fame will be turning over to the mainstream come next November when she releases a menswear and womenswear collection for H&M. CDG has always been known for its avant garde roots and its uncompromising dedication to quality and design. I’ve always put CDG and Kawakubo on a pedestal for not putting business first and cutting corners so I was quite surprised when I heard about this collaboration.

“I have always been interested in the balance between creation and business,” says Kawakubo of the collaboration. “It is a dilemma, although for me creation has always been the first priority. It is a fascinating challenge to work with H&M since it is a chance to take the dilemma to its extreme, and try to solve it.” – Vogue.co.uk

I really dislike that this collab will only account for a fraction of what the CDG brand stands for, but hey, its Kawakubo! And its arguably the most exciting H&M collaboration since Karl Lagerfeld. What do you guys think?

Q&A with goodboy clothing

Posted by Gloria Chik on April 6th, 2008 - 3 Comments

goodboy_qa

What does it mean to be a goodboy or a goodgirl? Entrenched in the urban hiphop culture that thrives in the City of Toronto, goodboy clothing seeks to represent sustainability and depth that the city has been searching for. I first came across these guys at the manifesTO event back in September. Their booth and their mantra represented a fresh urban perspective that I haven’t seen for awhile.
