A peruse down Queen West has been atypical as of late, but well worth the visit for “Captured Fusion”, a solo exhibition by Robert Ross at the Sleeping Giant Gallery. A great collective of abstract art (mostly acrylic paintings) – the showing engulfs you in creative from first step in the door (just past the tempermental TVs in the window facing the street. Automatic door-slam off and ons?)

+1 for Toronto!

The frozen-smoke concept evokes a haunting ambience. The spareness of color enhances this effect I got the impression of staring into the first-stage of an embryonic reality just beginning to unfurl (bigbang?). There is a multi-layered message within each work that speaks of the nature of form in the context of formlessness not unlike cloudwatching. this visual language is not easily translated but works on the tier of intuition, in that as one percieves the works of Rob Ross there is no immediate frame of reference and so the mind recalls and invents one-this makes for an individualized understanding of these works that adds to the replay value.
Just wish I could afford to buy one!
