Blue Dragon @mirvish

I’ve always wanted to be trilingual. The Blue Dragon only aggravated that desire. A Mirvish production held at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on King, the story is a three person powered cast that covers Chinese culture (well timed, Mirvish, well timed) from the point of view of an ex-pat in Shanghai. Every issue from adoption to Chinese piracy is covered, and delivered brilliantly. My favourite part – the set. Oh, the set. Simple, functional, and dynamic. Everything was recreated before our eyes – train stations, trains moving, bicycling on a harbour, a Chinese apartment, an esteemed art gallery…it’s listless how they transformed the space into an imaginative area.

Here’s the official exerpt:

Robert Lepage, Canada’s internationally acclaimed theatrical genius, brings Toronto a must-see event! The Blue Dragon is the evocative tale of a Canadian in modern day China, told with eloquent dance, electrifying performance and spectacular, cinematic staging.

The life of an expat Canadian living in Shanghai is turned upside down by two women — one from his Western past and one from his Asian present. Written by Robert Lepage and Marie Michaud, The Blue Dragon is a sequel to their brilliant collaborative work, The Dragon’s Trilogy. The Blue Dragon shimmers with all Lepage’s hallmark hi-tech wizardry and storytelling magic!

This production is performed in English, French and Mandarin with English surtitles.

The show is on until February 19th, 2012. Rush tickets (2 hours before the show) are $20. Happy year of the Dragon!

Free Facebook Moo Cards – I got ‘em!

Posted by Gloria Chik on January 8th, 2012 - 2 Comments

Taking care of business. I love fun freebies, and I spotted this one on Mashable last week. I’ve always loved moo cards and was ecstatic to learn that they were giving away free Facebook moo cards. Taking from your cover photos, your profile photo, and your details, you can customize this hard stock beauty into a pack of 50 stunning pieces of stock. FREE. FREE! Did I emphasize FREE? It’s wild. I’m impressed.

I’m currently working on a fix for the site – touch ups, redos, music changes (YICKS! Sorry guys), and new business cards for all of the lovely writers. Remember – only the first 50k per day will be able to order these for free. 200,000 sets of cards will be given away in total. Follow the instructions in the Mashable link – it’s super easy and stellar.

Get your own free cards – they’re expected to arrive early February. Can’t wait to show you how they come back!

Daphne Guinness at FIT

If anyone dare contest that fashion is not true art, take them to see the Daphne Guiness exhibit at FIT.

Take them to visit the jewel encrusted Chanel blazer, McQueen gowns which were pain-stakingly detailed and the Louboutin shoes that defy gravity.

The gallery is divided into 6 sections : Dandyism, Armor, Chic, Evening Chic, Exoticism, & Sparkle, each more drool worthy than the next and divided by gauze panels that allow you to see all angles of each garment. The room is shrouded in mysterious flickers of light and on each end of the room are two videos, which are co-produced by Guiness are played on repeat.

The exhibit runs until Jan.17th, so if you are lucky enough to be in NYC before that time, I strongly recommend that you pay this exhibit a visit. You’ll never see anything like it again, unless of course one day you happen to find yourself a friend of Ms.Guiness.

No Rules in Justice.

Was sent this from a friend and someone I’d like to support – Nima Bell’s first go at a short film. “No Rules in Justice” took 5 months of preparation to produce this fantastic footage about friendship…and not so. Enjoy!
