Style Review: 2011 MTV Movie Awards

Posted by Maria Calderon on June 10th, 2011 - 1 Comment

While nothing beats the glamour of the Oscars when it comes to red-carpet style-watching, you can always count on the MTV Movie Awards to bring on the fun, hot, youthful trends for the summer. Fitted mini dresses, lots of metallics, and pretty rompers ruled the carpet at this year’s awards show.

Let’s start with the night’s “Generation Award” winner Reese Witherspoon whose fitted leopard mini-dress choice surprised me, as i’ve always usually brushed off her red-carpet looks as being a little… oh, on the boring side. The Zac Posen mini, however, was anything but – instead of the typical and often tacky gold/black combo, her leopard-print mini was black and gray, with a sweetheart neckline (so feminine!) and fit her just right, making her look youthful, fresh and elegant.

Now on to the bling: Metallics were a big trend at this year’s awards with celebs from Kristen Stewart to Leighton Meester donning pieces covered in shiny hardware. While I thought their dresses were ok, they were a little too much for my eyes (no hate mail please, Twi-hards) and I much preferred Mila Kunis’ subtle choice of a multi-coloured metallic skirt toned down with a simple black top. Paired with limited jewelry and pale pink pumps, the outfit was appropriately casual, fun and flirty.

Last, but not least, the romper trend was another favourite of the night with the young and the old(er), proving that this look can span all ages. Contrasting Cameron Diaz’s black romper pick, was 13 Year-old Elle Fanning’s pink Dolce & Gabbana belted romper. Covered in a floral print, the romper was sweet, pretty and just right for the summer.

What was your favorite MTV Movie Awards trend?

LGFW ATTITUDE Jay Manuel Fall Winter 2011

Posted by Josette Blackwood on April 4th, 2011 - Leave a Comment

I attended the Jay Manuel ATTITUDE for Sears show and it was quite good. I like that Sears has stepped their game up, especially now since The Bay is giving them a run for their money.

Styled by June Ambrose, it was a great first runway show –the clothes overall were fresh, very spring, and extremely wearable. A little something for the everyday working girl who desires a bit of affordable edge. My favourites had to be both suits, in black and in white, and the camel coat with the fur trim – I’m a sucker for tailoring.

Lucian Matis: LGFW F/W 2011

Posted by Josette Blackwood on March 31st, 2011 - 1 Comment

I have waited for years to be in the audience of a Lucien Matis show. Ever since his time on the first season of Project Runway Canada, I have been a big fan.

Held at The Design Exchange, rather than amongst the craziness that is Fashion Week at Heritage Court on the CNE Grounds in Toronto (a lot more designers are doing this, and I have to say  I kinda like it!), Matis’ collection did not lack the opulence and old European touches, he’s known for.

Big ruffles, big shoulders, and a mix of textures ranging from feathers, to sequins to chunky knits made up this a gorgeous and diverse collection. Some pieces wearable, some one-of-a-kind, but all stellar craftsmanship nonetheless.

Sincere apologies for the poor picture quality.

The Heart Truth Fashion Show 2011

Posted by Gloria Chik on March 26th, 2011 - Leave a Comment

Unlucky for me, as I missed what looked like an unofficial kick off for Fashion Week in Toronto by the Heart Truth Fashion Show 2011. The event was to raise awareness for women to take charge of their heart health. One of a kind red dresses were designed for Canadian celebrities to wear (and suits for the men by V. Hazelton) in support of the cause.

Some more snippets:

“We’re reaching Canadian women with this lifesaving message: it’s time to take charge of your heart health”, says Bobbe Wood, CEO of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.  “Make healthy lifestyle choices, monitor your cholesterol and blood pressure levels, and advocate for the care you need from your doctor.  And to Canadian men, we say support the women you love to protect their heart health.”

Each March since its launch, the red dress symbol has come to life on the runway with the support of the fashion industry and celebrity models at the Heart Truth Fashion Show. As the official symbol of The Heart Truth campaign, the red dress represents women’s courage, passion and their power for change as they share the truth with others and raise awareness about the importance of heart health.

You can watch the full show after the jump.
