Canadian designers are invited to enter Art of Fashion’s 12th designer competition and truck show in Teedot. Shiny prizes? 1000, a complimentary professional photo shoot with model, hair and makeup, street-level exposure in the window display of one of Toronto’s top fashion outlets, and a few tricks up their sleeve.

Launch yonder career starting with an entry by Tuesday, August 31, 2010.

“We chose this year’s theme, La Belle Époque, in order to draw a hopeful historical parallel with the “beautiful era” before World War I – a time of glamour, opulence …

Here we go – The EATONS are back again, with cover art from mister Flex. Come out to the Silver Dollar on August 26th (oh, Thursday eh?) and give them a deserving cheers to the new CD. Join Boris and co (and me!) starting at 9:00pm and tap your feet along with some sweet new tunes. The other bands featured aren’t half-bad either, which is half reason for you to come out. So, come!

Rather than being my usual dismissive self when it comes to emails from strangers (you wouldn’t believe how many us bloggo-fiends get), I wanted to give this a shot. I’m not a huge fan of naming that involves the word “Tha” (or rather, tha word tha), I think the cinematography is great on this one, and it’s all about spotting Toronto up and comers. So here ye go, Tha Prophecy final chapter. Is it seemingly a departure from my regular reportings? Myeh, I’m dismissive of that thought. urbanebloc = next …

A well valued visit to the Brothel Without Walls and Probing McLuhan exhibit proved it to be worthy of the primary exhibition status at the CONTACT Photography Festival. Image after image of bright and saturated coloured photos, intelligible and thought provoking quotes decorated the stark walls of the University of Toronto Centre (UTAC). By far my favourite gallery, inclusive of photography, written art, video, and an abundance of risqué all in one place. At first glance, much of the display doesn’t hint at anything other than PG13. A second look …

A fanatic and advocate for graduate art (nothing like fresh talent), I did some moseying over to Yorkville to the Drabinsky Gallery, a two level wonder filled to the brim with photography and video (literally, every tip and turn of the gallery held incredible pieces). A backdrop?

This student-driven exhibition introduces an exciting group of talented emerging artists from the prestigious photography program of the Ontario College of Art & Design. This exhibition showcases a variety of photographic perspectives from the thesis work of these promising recent …

Are you looking for the oh-so-trendy jumpsuits? Or cute summer dresses that you can wear from the patio to the cocktail party? Look no further than Snoflake, a contemporary women’s boutique line. With her Spring/Summer 2010 collection, Debbie Sutton, the Toronto-based designer, has effortlessly shown her ability to blend the edgy with the classy without compromising quality and style.

My favourite is the Holly Go Lightly dress. I have no doubts that the multi-colour crescent print would glimmer under the hot summer sun. And the length? Well, let’s just say it’s …

The Power Plant is something that I hold plenty near and dear to my heart – primarily due to the abundance of nostalgia that I’m overcome with when I step foot inside (back in the day when I had taken Contemporary Arts and Technologies as a summer school credit. Amazing).

The outdoor imagery of individuals created solely through newspapers was one to supply with a double take. The concept? How press, news, and gossip has managed to manifest itself into the creation of an individual identity.

“The 50 people in the photograph …

There’s something astoundingly pleasant about briskly strolling the lanes within the Distillery District. Better yet, doing it with purpose – the end destination being Sheridan Applied Arts’ Photo display at 55 Mill Street (Arta Gallery). Aside from mistakenly wedding crashing (nothing like an obtuse venture into a near-matrimonial union).

Despite the faulty visit, I was swept away by the beautiful imagery that was produced by the young talent that resides within Sheridan College (always without fail). They say that the display defies categorization – and I’m more than willing to embrace …

It’s taken me far too long to post these, but they must go up. I remember being absolutely floored by the stunning photography / styling of these photos during LGFW F/W 2010 time (still am, when looking at it). You know that it’s great foreshadowing for a line when you’d be more than eager to have the leading image hang on your wall. Enough gushing, here are the goods:

Two visits to the middle of what seemed to be nowhere, and I ended up finally finding my destination. The Marshall McLuhan building featured an installation on the reconstruction of the media master’s presence – “Through the Vanishing Point”. Better said, not in my words:

From 1963 until his death in 1980, McLuhan conducted his groundbreaking research on the nature of communication, media and technology at this site, which is commonly known as the Coach House. Presenting two separate but complementary works, the artists visually and aurally …
