Shop Song was ringing through my headphones for the longest time – and the one accountable for doing this to me was none other than miss PEARL FUTURE (aka Pearly), the next power vocalist emerging from Bay Area, US. We first got in touch through the beauty of social networking – a la MySpace. Being amazingly down to Earth (if you can believe – this girl moderates her own page comments and takes the time to respond), Pearl Future did a little Q&A for urbanebloc.com on her upcoming gigs.

She’s a “Cali hippie type with a gangster mentality”. Read up after the jump.

You’re so fond of the San Fran Bay Area – tell me how it’s influenced you / why you’re running it there?
hmmm, many things have happened to me here in the Bay that have contributed to who I am so…yes, this area is under my skin. At 17 I lived in a communal artist warehouse… the rent was super cheap. It was a crazy mini government going on in there and they threw huge underground parties all the time. I met a lot of DJ’s and musicians, but they were sometimes on another musical trip than me. I interned at a hip hop studio and was writing pop music… my music evolved outta that. But I also met poets and painters and famous drag queens, so it all worked out. The Bay Area is unique in the way the way that there is a lot of open mindedness and so many different types of personalities. You end up with very few similar people… you bond on a different level. Like basically just acceptance. But I live by the street rules. If you treat me cool, I treat you cool. I stay outta your business, you outta mine. If I like you we are tight. Don’t hussle me.

You have an aggressive nature to your music – how do you think it makes people react?
I hope it makes people assert themselves. Either to themselves or the world around them. I have a fighting spirit. Not so much physically, but mentally. I can be mouthy too. I stand up for things, but not in an activist way, more in a protective personal way. I’m the friend that stands up for you. I also am a firm believer that you have to go get the things you want outta life. I have a big heart that I protect. Its easy to get taken advantage of… so I pretty much play it safe. No one gets a pass until they earn it.

Dr. Dre, Bjork, Chopin – all such different backgrounds, how do you mix elements of all of them together to form your own style?
The original list for those references was so big. I made a list and the writer chose those… but I admit, she was keen, they represent me well.

You started in music so early – who has ever heard of a sound engineer at 16! Tell me what it was like working professionally while still being a teenager.
Yes, at 16 I engineered my first session alone. I handled the patching and sending and outboard gear. It was a Neve console and it was a tracking and transfer session. That’s what I did a lot… we transferred ADAT sessions into ProTools 24.. an early platform of Protools… I’m glad we’re into HD now. I moved onto editing once I started recording my first album.

You’re originally from Vegas – do you think that plays into your entertainment factor?
Yes, I’m sure it does. The lights and costumes are addictive. My Dad was a pit boss and I was regularly left at casinos to be watched, like CircusCircus. It was fun… adults snuck me in backstage to the shows. It was surreal… I’m sure it rubbed off.

Shop Song is unnervingly addictive, it sounds like such a powerful song with piercing vocals. Where’d the idea come from?
I have a girlfriend and when her and I get together there is this crazy shopping chemistry. We are insane and it feels like a drug, we go outta control. I was trying to capture that. I’m not gonna lie… it’s not my first time in a store!!

You’re so direct with your fans! Even for myself, I met you on MySpace, how do you connect with people usually, and how does the Internet play into your art / craft?
I love the internet… when I can get on it! I don’t get a lot of time for it lately. I love how there is a real spirit of “doing your dreams” online. People sharing stuff, opening their minds. I like meeting people online, and like with us, it’s was really easy to meet, so it’s cool. I was able to find your blog and you could hear my music… I love that! I have also been able to work with other musicians from all over the world because of the internet and that has been great. The internet is changing the music and entertainment industry a lot. It is pretty wild right now.

What’s something that’s in your music collection that would surprise us?
Would screamo surprise you? I dig Brokencyde and stuff like them, it’s a cool genre. I love heavy metal and classic rock too. Techno and Drum-N-Bass. Oh, I know what would surprise you… Andreas Vollenweider! Surprise!

What’s next Pearly, where can we find you?
You called me Pearly… thats crazy cuz that shopping girlfriend of mine calls me that!! Girl, I bet we could shop!! :) Next? Well, A LOT! I have been developing my style and sound over these past months and we will be starting slow as we lead up to my single and album release, sometime in late 2010. I’ll be touring again also. Getting the word out and creating awareness to let pop music fans know about the music is what I’m doing right now. That is why it is so great to do this for your dope blog, you are definitely up on stuff early… I love that!

Katrina Tuttle was one of my favourite showcases from the last season (see blog post here). For Fall/Winter 2010, Katrina’s line is less pleats and more vintage inspired textures. It’s a pretty collection with a little less of the ordinary. See after the jump for the Q&A that I had with this young designer.

What’s new this season? What are the main changes from the last?
This season I’m doing more separates for fall – things that are cozy, allowing for people to mix and match. I’m doing mostly coats with great tailoring and detail (it’s what makes a coat special – adding a little “wow” but not too much, it can be overkill!). I like swing coats that are more loose, as well as the opposite end of fitted, tailored jackets. There are about four jackets in this collection.

How important is having your hand in everything (styling, makeup, shooting the lookbook)?
Since I was little (probably about when I was six years old) I wanted to do everything – be a photographer, a designer, a make up artist…and really all of those things go hand in hand. I try to keep up to date with all of the trends and techniques, usually through large publications or outtakes from shoots. The main look for this season that I’m keen on is straight hair with a smokey eye, and nude make up. We did the photoshoot at a WW2 training base – it’s edgy, raw. The shooting was putting focus on movement and strong silhouettes.

There was commentary about your construction quality last season – what is your response?
There’s always going to be something that people don’t like, and truth of the matter is that sometimes you don’t see everything before it goes down the runway. I take it as criticism and move on to become better.

How do you integrate “comfort” into your line?
Comfort is in fabrics that hold structure, aren’t boring and are…comfortable! I wouldn’t want to create “an amazing dress that you don’t want to sit in”. I’m focusing on dresses – they’re versatile and easy (and can be mixed with a blazer to be dressed up). It’s a mix of fitted with movement and contour, as well as straight shift styles that are belted.

Would you say there’s any east coast influence in your line?
Mostly involving nature – the oddest things can inspire you. It’s easy to get a concept for a collection that way. There’s a bunch of great stores in Halifax, but I find my shoes mostly in Toronto (Hazelton lanes). I like vintage stores and vintage jewelry – they make some strong and bold statements.

You’re young – how have you found entering fashion so early?
I grew up around business so it wasn’t too much of a challenge. I was always so interested in fashion – when I was young I purchased all types of books to help me learn about fashion and pattern making. My favourite book would probably be drafting in 1980s. It was a crash course in vintage – it’s still in my closet just in case.

You say you’re influenced by “bold”. What is “bold” to you?
Bold can be in the form of a silhouette, a colour, a pattern, or a strong piece with print.

What’s next?
I’ll be looking to continue with LG Fashion Week to help build awareness, but I’d also like to expand across Canada. I’ll be launching an online store as well – so keep a look out!

Orange. Angela Chen is an up and coming designer who hails from a diverse background – originally from Taiwan, to the West Coast of Canada (Vancouver), and New York for the Parsons School of Design. She’s a vibrant soul and down to earth, bursting with energy and sass. When I arrived at Lotus Leaf Communications’ office, I was welcomed by the rush of media, models, and stunning clothes as my surroundings. Funny enough, I was then instantly ushered into the back office whilst filming of a segment for LGFW, and bump into a long-time must meet, Sally Han of Psalms 91:1 Accessories. Angela’s collection is stunning, affordable, wearable, and something I’m yearning to see again. Read the Q&A after the jump.

Why “Orange”?
It wasn’t necessarily because of the fruit or the colour, but two other reasons. People often call me Ange, which isn’t too far off of Orange. When my boyfriend (who’s a graphic designer) did the branding for my line, it ended up being so fitting.

West Coast to East Coast – what was your experience migrating?
I was born in Taiwan, moved to Vancouver, then went to New York City for seven years for school. Every place has its place – they all stay in me and slowly come out. I was doing a lot of things in between – right when I came out of school I actually worked at a sweater licensing company that did work for brands like Forever 21, Michael Kors.

The one thing that really differs for me are the seasons and styles. This season it’s about the hard sophisticated touch of New York mixed with the comfy and stylish West Coast. NYC is all about the energy, people, environment, old Hollywood. Vancouver? It’s about relaxing. That’s life – the divide.

What was your Parsons Experience like?
Vigorous. I remember the first thing that a professor had said to us when I started there was “I’m here to weed out the weak – if you can’t make it, go and become a real estate agent”. Being there for school really taught me to learn what I liked and didn’t like, and be decisive as a designer.

Celebrity Clientele – what do you think of your roster?
It’s so amazingly flattering – I love how they come across the brand. It’s a huge step. We send lookbooks to their stylists and are lucky enough to be picked out of a line.

3 Years into your line, where do you think it’s taken you?
It’s taught me a great deal about everything to do with running a business and a clothing line. You do PR, sales, design, and people want to put you to work. I’m not rushing with it! The biggest challenge has really been figuring out everything on my own – manufacturer relationships, fabrics, buyers, and more.

What does the Orange girl look like?
The Orange girl can look like anyone – there’s really and truly something for everyone. And they’re at accessible price points.

What are your thoughts on showing in LG Fashion Week?
There are so many things that happen during LG Fashion Week! I didn’t expect to have so many interviews which is a fantastic thing – I’ve had some huge buzz thanks to my amazing PR girl [note that Julia of Lotus Leaf Communications has entered the room]

How do you know one another?

We met three weeks ago and it’s been non-stop! We’re practically soul sisters. We picked some great music for the show, things that really highlighted the pieces and the emotions. Hope you like it!

Where to next?
I’m actually showing in Shanghai right after this! It’s one week and they have some higher end stores. Really looking forward to going to Asia.

Last week I had the pleasure of stopping by to meet Lani Karls, VP and Creative Director for popular clothing lines Kensie and Kensie Girl (oh, and my newest learning being that the company is a cousin of mac and jac).
Last week I had the pleasure of stopping by to meet Lani Karls, VP and Creative Director for popular clothing lines Kensie and Kensie Girl (oh, and my newest learning being that the company is a cousin of mac and jac). Seven questions fired in the shortest snippet of time led to the creation of this post on the definition of pretty (and one very strong addiction to their amazing video set to an original song by…an original member of Lillix, if you can remember them).

What is the embodiment of “Pretty” clothes? How do you make a piece “Pretty”?
The Kensie customer can mix soft and hard – you know, the biker with frills, contemporary clothing. Pretty is organic.

Aside from dresses, how do you make pretty?
We try to use soft fabrics, textures, and really focusing on how it makes the customer feel as opposed to strictly the way it looks.

Video is largely becoming a force in fashion communication – how has it changed your direction?
Oh it’s challenging! It’s something new to take on – with the way that the web has moved with video. We try to make our website extremely engaging, focusing on being interactive.

What is your favourite piece of pretty this season?
My favourite piece would hve to be the tiered dress with shimmer and print! It’s the right mix of hard and soft to create something really uniquely pretty.

How does Vancouver / West Coast mentality influence Kensie?
Vancouver has a sense of freedom – things are organic and outdoorsy. It’s reflective in the Kensie and Kensie girl lines, we love the relaxed sophistication of Vancouver.

Kensie intimates sounds pretty – tell me more!
Oh you read that did you! We just had our licensing agreement. You’ll definitely get a sense of more pretty, it’s got femininity, rockstar and a touch of soft.

Shoes, linens, and fragrance – what can we expect?
It’s all about synergy and helping build and compliment a lifestyle – always catering to the Kensie girl.

Darkhorse Espresso Bar on Queen and Spadina is buzzing on a Saturday afternoon as I scurry through the doors to be met by a quirky girl with one furry earring dangling from her right lobe. Instantly I knew that I was looking at Tatomme Flanagan, finalist in the AXE Summer Gig Contest. 5 girls and 5 boys are pitted against one another in online challenges to win what they’ve referred to as the “Ridiculously, Ridiculously Good Summer Gig” – yes, complete with shades in the typography. It’s 60 days when you’re young and single, getting paid $10,000 to be a Consumer Consultant for your favourite spray deodorant (one girl and one guy will be chosen). After ordering some of the finest coffee in the city, we perch down on a door-based wooden table and get down to a conversation about how she got to finalist stage.

Tell me about Peachland.

Ah, Peachland, BC. It’s near a place called Okanagan Valley – or rather, “The Valley”. Peachland was a small residential town, with about 5,000 people. It was a fun time, I went to private school for the first little bit, it definitely helps form who you are. It was all complete with amazing teachers and old friends. I remember spending a lot of time in malls. The town (not a city!) died everyday at 5pm, so you definitely had to be creative in entertaining yourself. It was amazing in the summer.

Why are you a pyro, according to your AXE profile?

Hm, good question. I’m not too too sure – I love cooking and apparently I burn things, which makes me some sort of pyro? Apparently Jamie Oliver’s also my main manpan.

Why do you love Jamie Oliver?

What’s not to love? His accent’s adorable, he’s down to earth, travels for cultural experiences, makes cooking simple. Manpan it is.

What does Campus Couture mean to you? (sidenote: Tatomme was featured on College Candy in March)

My day-to-day style really changes, I love baggy clothes and jeans and a tshirt. I love inventing things – going to outdoor markets, getting materials, creating things like this one-earring thing I’m wearing today (nothing like the fishing section for jewelry materials). I love vintage, and I love Ossington.

From Toronto-to-Toronto, what do you think this gig means for you?

The living situation will definitely change – I can’t say no to a swank pad. I’m currently living with roomies. The job is definitely going to be something new to take on. I’m currently working in the Distillery District (which I sometimes take for granted, the place is beautiful!). I applied for the gig at the end of last year because a friend had thought I was perfect for the role, and heard back in January. Since then I’ve been running around to win votes and the hearts of AXE fans!

How are you preparing yourself for this new role, should you get it?

Definitely going into it with an open mind, but I’m running into it a bit blind. I love change though – I get bored with my surroundings easily. I’m studying journalism right now, but would love to try my hand at marketing. I adore broadcast journalism – it’s not too far of a stretch!

This gig is also about blogging and documenting your personal life. Tell me how do you plan on finding dates?

I’m not sure if I’m getting set up on dates, but I’ll definitely have to start scoping out some cute ones and get cracking on that. A fine date would be going out for a light summer patio day, complete with a Guiness to start and a light beer like Mill St. Tankhouse. Mm.

What’s your take on AXE?
I love their marketing – it’s pretty hilarious and catchy. AXE is all about youth – I think I fit right in. I’ve got some good competition in this contest, I’ve met a few of the other folks and we’re all really keen on it.

You blog! About food. Tell me about it.
I’m a vegetarian – born and raised. I like writing about recipes, how I experiment with food on a student budget. My favourites are rice bowls and plenty of leafy greens. The ideal boy (meat lover or not) would join me for a nice veggie dinner.

You’ve only got until MARCH 31ST to vote for Tatomme here: http://www.axesummergig.ca/?q=node/9.

Suddenly a fan? Follow her Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/tatomme, or check her blog here: http://tatomme.blogspot.com/. Why wouldn’t you be? The girl will pose with brooms for a good photo (hearts – thanks Tatomme for being a great sport. Merci to Lauren for the set up *wink.

And by that I mean a band that has you bopping in your seat while multi-tasking, and singing along to words that you didn’t realized you had learned. TV Heart Attack, based out of Vancouver (Thorny Bleeder Records), is a band starting to make waves with their latest EP “Lost in the Sway“. Lucky me happened to be in Van city and had the opportunity to meet up with Jason Corbett for a Q&A amidst the Olympics action to chat music, TV, and possibly heart attacks (or something of the sort).

TV Heart Attack – who are you?

TV Heart Attack came together after being unsatisfied with previous bands. I wanted something fresh, new, and a way to express myself. We’ve got a busy group of guys together, Art and I do the business and write the music, Ryan is an actor on the side (he’s on Smallville, has been on Battle Star Galactica), and Dom is a full time drummer.

TVHA says they experiment with sound – how do you describe it as of right now?

I’d say our music is a throw back to the 80s in how we write it – it’s a modern take with retro influences like Echo and the Bunny, David Bowie, and Gang of Four. We gather those influences and put them into today’s format. It’s sort of a pop structure…poppier and more accessible than Queens of the Stone Age.

You’re coming to Toronto to perform for Canadian Music Week – what can we expect from TVHA live?

The record’s always one thing – slick and should be well produced. But when you play live you can be more dangerous and raw. People should expect a good rock show.

What kind of people do you attract out?

Well…a lot of pretty girls.

And why is that?

Oh, we’re friendly guys! But really, we get a good variety of people out – not people that you might expect out at rock shows. We like performing in smaller venues to get into the vibe of the room. But don’t get us wrong, we’ve played larger venues like Virgin Music Festival (the year the Killers were on), but you get to be a little more connected with the crowd in a smaller gig.

You say that some things are best left unexplained. Any examples of other things you think shouldn’t be explained?

I think having to explain what kind of genre of music we are…someone best described it recently as “goth light”, which I hadn’t heard before. I think that labeling it in a genre provides people with a perception before they hear you. Who wants that?

The AO music video has some pretty interesting imagery – any explanations as to what you were going for?

We wanted to create a homage to 2001 Space Odyssey’s look. We were a bit restricted in space for the shoot because of our equipment (insurance issues). We chose to use a Genesis video because it’s the closest to film that we could get. The concept was brainstormed by with the production team…though I think it was a bit of a pretty safe music video. AO is a radio and commercial song though.

How have your experiences on the Saddlesores and Speed to Kill influenced your TVHA work?

With Saddlesores I wrote a couple songs that we played at the time. Some people paint and some write poetry. It was never about the rock lifestyle, money, fame…it was a matter of expression. Sharing the experience of connecting with people. When I was a kid I listened to Led Zeppelin and had the hairs at the back of my neck stand up. I want to share that experience with others.

You say that you were an only child and did plenty of drawing and listening. But after flipping a coin, went with music. Any art practice anymore?

Ah, when I was a kid I played with a metal bar and my mom drew out the idea that I wanted to play guitar. The next day, it appeared. I devote everything to the music now – I write lyrics in the morning, night, at work. I collect words, collect ideas on my iPhone, play with my guitar and paint with words. TV Heart Attack is one side of how encompassing music is for me. I still get some outlets for art – I like working with people to put together concepts, I designed the logo for the new record. I’m interested in how music and art is produced – they’re almost synonymous.

Who would be iconic now?

Queens of the Stone Age has a great following…rock and roll is in and out of fashion. Culture these days seems to be just about pop music. Everything’s 99 cents or free. Music has changed and become disposable. Though I’m hoping that certain bands will have certain impact that only time can tell, like Grizzly Bear and Arcade Fire.

How do you find new music?

I’m always around music from DJs to satellite radio…helps to have a lot of friends in music too.

How do you judge whether or not you think something is good?

I like to have a little grit to my music. I thought that the latest Grizzly Bear record was probably the best one that I’ve ever heard. I like Vampire Weekend, Lady Gaga (guilty pleasure), Massive Attack, Department of Eagles, Caribou (genius), Rammstein (the translations of their lyrics is really smart and taking a piss out of themselves). Though I think they’re the Nickelback of Germany. I don’t like things to be too overproduced – like Phoenix, they’re a bit too polished for me.

How closely do you listen to lyrics?

I’m more about the melody over the core procession. And when words are used in a way I’ve never heard before. There’s an art to it – someone can say something so simple but say it with such conviction. And well, when someone else sings the same thing, it can sound like shit.

TVHA was formed in 2005 – where have been been, where are you now, and where are you going? Happy 5 years anniversary!

I told myself when this started that if I wasn’t quitting my day job by X date, I had to stop it. If that had happened, I would have missed out on the most amazing things that have happened with me. Right now we’re having a single that’s on heavy rotation on the radio, we’ve played with the Killers, one of our songs is on a 2010 Video Game. We’re going on tours, seeing cities, being part of festivals, and getting great reviews on our last EP. I don’t know if people are just being nice…but I’ve been surprised at how much positive review it’s gotten. Probably one out of 30 have been bad. Almost every time someone writes something about it, we can pull a line from it as a quote.

Shannon Theresa Boodram is one of the most vibrant and warm people I’ve ever met. Former track-star, host and associate producer of a Rogers TV series, journalist, photographer, and now published author – she’s got the world and then some. I preface this posting with the skinny mini on what it’s about – Shannon Boo is the author of LAID: Young People’s Experiences with Sex in an Easy-Access Culture.

I spotted the stunning talent featured in an article for the Toronto Star when doing some digging for my day job. I’m marveled at how intensely transparent and open she is (like…a book you might comment?) Straight from reading up on her story, I knew I had to connect with her, as she was certain to be a driver of local and national culture (sex or no sex).

Racy as this might seem, the commonality in all of the content on urbanebloc.com is local talent, double takes, and engaging people. Miss Boodram is all of the above – check thrice.

Tell me about you – Shannon Boodram, a 24 year old author.

I had the most negative start to my sexual experience – I was 16 and had set off from my first encounter onwards to become what I thought was a vixen lifestyle. I had personal mistakes that I was carrying with me, and it was only when I went away to a girls-heavy university in Baltimore that I had realized that I wasn’t a freak. That when people opened up to one another to talk about their experiences, they would learn honest, sexual education.

I left a track scholarship to come back and pursue journalism. I started a website to collect stories about sexual experiences, starting with sharing my own. Ultimately I started it for myself, I was still unclear about sexuality and learning how to be satisfied with it – I found that this was an especially powerful message to share with youth.

Where did the stories come from?

I recruited like no other – I joined social networks and searched out stories by messaging people that might be willing to share. Of course those messages were met with a flurry of “You creep! You weirdo!”, but it was what I had to do to get real people with real stories. That was one of the guidelines for submissions – they had to be written in the voice of talking to your best mate. None of that “The club was pulsating with a rich beat” or prose. Real recollections. Say what you would actually say and give people “the juice” I say.

How did you edit through all the stories?!

I would wittle them down – from 50 to four to two to one. Each one had refining –though honestly I was a bit tired of reading so many sex stories. But I knew that each piece had to include the little details, descriptors to bring the reader to the real experience.

I also wanted to be inclusive of everything – there are five chapters ranging from hookups to abstinence. I think it’s incredible how willing to the contributors were to share their stories.

How did you get your publishing break?

A lot of rejection. I remember visiting bookstores to see what other books were on the shelves and contacting the publishers of those books to see if they would be interested in something different like my collective. It took awhile…over two years and then I got an agent. The funny thing is that I still have a stock of rejection letters that I just sifted through the other day – a few years ago I actually received a no from my currently publisher. I guess the overall message was to just keep persisting, you never know.

You mention that you had sent the link to your parents – what was that like?

My mom cried. My dad? He was surprisingly supportive (and later even helped to edit and revise the book). It took a little while for people to come around and understand the mission I was on. I think everyone started out unsupportive, but when they come around they really come around. My extended family is now sharing it with their friends and family. It’s a bit funny to be reintroducing myself as a sex author.

Sex Author. It’s such a blunt title – how do you feel about it?

I don’t consider myself an expert on the subject, I’m not one to advise you medically or anything of that sort. But it’s definitely a product of me coming to terms and comfort with myself. It’s no an all-encompassing book – the idea is to create an open dialogue with interest, dedication, and research. I always say to “get yours” – which means to celebrate your sexuality. Make sure that whatever your decision is, that you’re wholly happy with it.

What’s your take on the media and sex portrayal now – it’s pretty hotly contested.

It’s interesting how they’re exposing things – new trends like sexting or whatever the kids are up to these days. I think the approach for the media is either panic or accusatory. It’s real – but what is it and why is it cool? It should be about the why and not the what.

You’re rich in Toronto culture, how did you find the community to be with the release of your book?

So, so supportive. Toronto folk are very open and accepting. The media has taken to the story, and the book has been doing amazing within the city [it sold out everywhere except the Eaton Centre].

Your best friend Andrea is an actress (formerly Hazel on Degrassi: The Next Generation) and runs ThoseGirlsAreWild.com with you. How did you meet?

We actually met when we were kiddies – when we were just girl guides together. The site is all about being confident, career-focused, and about strong girls. We started the blog together as a challenge, but now we’re obsessed with updating. She’s out in L.A., and I’m working it from Toronto.

How do you find dating now?

It’s tough to get out there after you’ve been hurt – it’s hard not to get caught up into signals that aren’t there or wondering all the time. The movie “He’s Just Not That into You” was pretty helpful. If you happen to find any boys that like me, send them my way!

What are you up to next?

I’m embarking on a book tour. Trying for 20-30 school tours to talk to youth about sexual education. I’m off to California.

And now for a special little message from Shannon herself to urbanebloc.com readers:

A release on the Dentsu Outdoor Gallery (D.O.G. from here on out) landed in my urbanebloc email awhile back, and there was something about it that I couldn’t shy my eyes away from. They were inviting, colourful and sharp banners on display that held so much creative promise that I couldn’t help but revisit it time and time again in digital form. Lucky for me, I went to the source of all this inspiration and imagination, and had the opportunity to speak with Creative Director of Dentsu Canada (www.dentsucanada.com), Glen Hunt.

What is the creative nature of the Dentsu brand?
The goal is to create something that connects with people – any brand tries to express itself in a way that communicates, connects, and inspires people to take action. At Dentsu we focus on something we call “the core truth”. It’s an internal tuning fork that when heard by customers, rings and makes a sound as an internal truth. We’re our own brand, our goal is to express who we are. That’s where characters like Walksabi come into play. The concept behind Wasabi is that only a little bit is needed to have a big impact – the same is true of great advertising. If you find something that resonates, it can have more influence in communicating with an audience.

We took wasabi and turned it into something more – usually it’s inanimate, but we wanted to give it life and personality. It’s not science, we want it to be connective and human. Maybe that’s why we turned him into a bobble body.

Dentsu Outdoor Gallery, or D.O.G. Why paint the imagery of a dog?
We’re always looking to find something that’s fun and approachable – isn’t that exactly what a dog is? It simplifies and it’s fun and friendly. There was the idea kicking around that we would have an agency dog, a bulldog named Dentsu. A British bulldog with a Japanese name

The D.O.G. pieces are unabashed and not afraid of colour. Why did you take on such a vibrant direction?
Dentsu used to be located at St. Clair and Yonge, which is a pretty beige area. When we moved downtown to King Street we had a street presence. King Street is for visitors to the city – crowds come in to see plays and for entertainment, we wanted to add some energy and colour. We wanted to adorn the building so it would stand out, and show we’re here to stay.

You chose to showcase Canadian artists of all ranges. First, why did you choose to use a collective, and secondly, how did you pick and choose artists to showcase?
The artists are all Canadian because there’s just so much creative genius that comes out of this country. It’s a collective because it keeps things fresh and new (we’re hoping to rotate every 3 months or so).

At the end of the day, we’re all human anthropologists – we have different languages and voices, we express our messages in so many different ways.

The theme of the gallery is more guerilla style and authentic. We’re not looking for fine art, but more mash ups and showcasing artists with visceral energy towards what they’re creating. It’s downtown artistry

What has your role been as creative director on the D.O.G. project and at Dentsu Canada?
Rather than a Creative Director, they call me the “Creative Catalyst”. I find ways to create impact and get messages out, to connect with people wherever possible. With D.O.G., we didn’t want to just put out a message about ourselves, but wanted to use this as an avenue to extend beyond that.

We believe that every place where we can situate a message is a potential medium for connection

You say in your profile on the Dentsu site, “Better a fearful end than an endless fear” – how does that apply to your day to day. Did it apply to D.O.G.?
Ah, that was a line from my dad, and I thought it was very telling. The only thing that stops us from going is fear – facing those fears is a way of constantly expanding. Instead of worrying about what people think, we say “instead of worrying about something, why don’t we do something”. We think of ourselves as the do-ers. There’s no sense in sitting and talking forever about whether something is right or wrong – just do it.

Creativity and innovation are words that are thrown around these days. We know they’re important, but how do we keep them in constant exercise? Maybe with the help of a little Wasabi?
Innovation is going through fear to go to the other side, to find things that people haven’t done before or thought about. Things are constantly changing, and what was once unique becomes regular. Find a unique way to inspire and trigger. Always think about “the purple cow” – when you stumble upon it, you’ll know it’s something special.

I’m so interested to hear what your take on social media is.
Giving people power is phenomenal – but it’s a power that needs to be directed. Ultimately, people will take over, but they have to have a reason. It can’t just be thrown out there. People are overwhelmed these days, they don’t need another reason to have a communication about something that doesn’t matter to them. It has to affect them in a positive way. Social media on its own isn’t impactful, but to connect people with something that they care to connect with, it is. If you’re just there to be there, don’t be there – it’s not meaningful and it’s not genuine.

What’s Dentsu up to these days – you’ve got so many great clients and brands under your name, what’s going on with you?
We’ve got six executions on the go with many new opportunities coming in. We’re finding new ways to connect with people and with us, searching through culture and treads. We recently completed a project with Sunnybrook Hospital which was extremely meaningful and had high personal impact. Much on the go – we’re addicted to watching the world adopt and change. Big things in the new year!

Give the gallery a visit at 276 King Street West. Also check out the gallery below for the sweet Walksabi in bobble-body form. Thanks Diana and Glen!

FYI: D.O.G. is currently showcasing eepmon (eepmon.com). Eric Sze-Lang Chan is a Canadian based multi-disciplinary artist who takes interest in exploring the creative intersections between the visual-arts and various forms of multimedia. He is constantly searching – searching the means to realize his work at its fullest potential. Eric is a recipient of the Canada Council for the Arts for Art Bank Purchase (2009), Computer Arts – Excellence Award for Illustration in the International Graduate Showcase (2008) and FITC 2006 Best Canadian Student.

It’s been a little while since we’ve had a stunning fresh face grace this blog – in waltzed an opportunity to interview the very lovely Rebecca Hardy. Amidst the bustlin flow of LG Fashion Week, Rebecca graciously took the time to meet with me at the ever so inconspicuous Starbucks on Queen West West (and West), slightly removed from the hectic style tent of LGFW.

Unlined notepad and no frills ballpoint pen in tow, I tip toed into the Starbucks curious as to whether or not I would be able to spot the top model within the cozy chain. All it really took was a meek wave from a blunt bang-ed beauty to realize we were on the same page.

Jokingly maneuvering her Canadiana flag umbrella aside and accepting a tiny decaf latte, we perched ourselves near a window to observe the bleary grey day and start the interview (fun fact – ’twas the same day that blogTO snapped me outside).

What have you been up to lately?

It’s been hectic – there’s a need to be here, there, and everywhere as a model. Since the show I’ve been in Milan, the UK, NYC, and home! I’ve done shows (just got a call to do one today but I’m all booked up), but I’ve been more involved in projects lately. I’ll be doing a show called Extreme Samurai by Hibibe – should be interesting because it’s being held at an Extreme Fitness location.

I’ve also been involved in doing local work, speaking to high school students about how I got started. It’s an interesting change because growing up if you asked my mother, she’d tell you I was the quietest kid on the block.

When you were first announced as Canada’s Next Top Model, you were portrayed as “Schneiders Meat Factory worker wins CNTM”. How did you feel about that headline?

I didn’t mind too much for a couple reasons – it was true and wasn’t a typical mall job, it spoke to what kind of person I was, and I got paid to exercise! You should’ve seen the big guns that I had when I was working there (chuckles). It wasn’t the most glamourous job though, basically I combined raw meats in blenders to create uhm…a couple other meat products. I enjoyed my time there, and everyone was really happy for me when it was finally announced that I had won.

How was it getting thrust into the fashion world – did you experience any culture shock?

Not too much culture shock – I think the show really helped prepare me for what was to come. I definitely think there are misconceptions about modeling (thinking we don’t eat, etc). It’s hard work – you have to keep healthy and exercise in order to keep up with the 14-15 hour work days, 3 hours of sleep, and wildly unpredictable schedule. It’s about making healthy choices and doing things like throwing sneakers into your luggage in the chance you get to go for a run, to loading up on veggies and avoiding junk.

People were surprisingly humble too – some people have the idea that the industry can be snotty and elitist. While that might be true, no one really wants to work with individuals who aren’t enjoyable to be around.

I also had a little practice with the travelling bit – I was in a serious soccer league when I was a kid (it was my life, and I wanted to do it professionally at one point!)

I always loved modelling in local shows and ads, submitting my demo tape was a last minute decision that I went for. Something clicked and it was right!

You were considered a little bit “older” when you got started, how do you feel that affected your experience?

I think it was perfect timing, I was glad to be done school and mature enough to handle so many things at once, I felt mentally and physically prepared for anything. There’s so much going on at once that it’s easier for me to be able to get a grip on everything. I can’t even pinpoint anything past next week in terms of scheduling, so it’s really helpful to be able to roll with the punches.

Are there any Canadian fashion figures that you’re in awe of?

Definitely Linda Evangelista. Jay Manuel is also someone that I have some incredible respect for – he has a sense of professionalism and creativity that’s unbelievable. You can see from season to season that the show (CNTM) is really taking off and going places. That and he hails from Toronto!

Speaking of Toronto, you’re currently living in the outskirts of the city. What’s your take on it?

The city is rich in culture – you walk down the street and you’ve got a diverse gathering of music and artists, to shops and food. I love that we’re able to help build an identity for the city, and for Canada as a whole.

Music and shops – what are your personal picks, and do you have any ’shame shops’?

My ipod goes with me everywhere, and I’ve got everything from metal to hiphop on it. Shopping can range from the local malls to I guess the “shame shops” like Value Village. You know, VV boutique has some good picks sometimes. I also really like H&M – they’ve got the trendy pieces down.

How would you describe your model walk?

(laughter) That’s a good one! I would say…a straightforward trot? At a pretty good pace I would say. Joan Heaton taught me how to walk – she’d make me do it, then tell me to do it over again and again until I got it spot on.

What’s up next for Rebecca Hardy?

I’d love to get into hosting and more into television! Right after this I’m actually doing a segment with Sarah Taylor from Much Music, for Much On Demand. I’m headed practically next door to check out a store and pick out some cool threads.

Hey Vijaya! Give us the low down on what you’re all about

Television has always been a huge part of my life growing up. I was one of those kids that would watch shows like The Polkadot Door, and wonder how kids like me made it onto the television screen. When I look back on those moments, I realize that I had found my passion in its infancy.

I am your everyday girl who loves going to the mall to scope out a bargain, visiting my local bubble tea stand to get my tapioca on, and listening to new and emerging bands. I also love food, so you can find me in the kitchen creating some kind of mess/magic. I usually let my guinea pigs be the judge of that.

In theme of Dorito’s Collisions, which do you think is better – Hot or Cool? Or Both?

Choosing between hot and cool is like choosing between your parents. It’s impossible!

Hot Habanero has a searing heat that lingers, creeps up on you, and then hits the back of your throat. Guacamole counteracts the heat of the habanero and cools the palate with the flavours of avocado, lime, and coriander. Yummy!

What’s been your favourite MuchMusic TV moment / program in watching it when growing up? I have to admit to loving Tree Toss and Fromage at the end of each year. Where’s Ed the Sock?!

All my favourite moments on MuchMusic have included fans meeting their favourite artists. There’s nothing like seeing the reaction on someone’s face when their idol walks through the door. It’s absolutely priceless. I remember when one fan got to meet Destiny’s Child. She flipped her lid when Beyonce, Kelly, and Michelle walked into the room to greet her. She was even more baffled when she realized Beyonce loved fried chicken just as much as she did!

It’s the obligatory fashion blog fashion question – what’s a style find for you?

I am always on the lookout for a fantastic dress. It has to be well structured, and I have to feel amazing wearing it. When I wear a killer dress, I feel like I’m on top of my A game, and ready to take on any challenge.

That being said, I am the type of girl who hangs onto a dress for years on end if it is the right one. I have some dresses that are almost 5 years old, that I still wear to this day. If I find the right one, I hang on to it for dear life and take great care of it.

Tell us a music vice of yours. We all have them (mine is the occasional Disney track). Anything that you’d be slightly embarrassed to have us find on your iPOD?

I think it’s so important to be unapologetic about your musical taste. It is so easy to get caught up in what’s “cool” and to try and fit in with everyone else. I say if you like an artist, stand by them and let the world know. I mean come on, how boring would it be if all of us liked the same music at any given time.

My friends and I love sing-alongs in the car to Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, and B4-4 (remember that gem of a band?).

You’ve got some great demo vids in the running for MuchMusic VJ – did you encounter any awkward moments in approaching people for your filming?

Honestly, all the people that I have interviewed have been excellent sports. Some of them may have been reluctant at first, because come on, how often do you have a camera zeroing in on your face. However, once we get talking, and I start to learn about their interests, they warm up to it.

If your interviewee trusts you, and realizes that you have their best interest in mind, they become a lot more open and generous with their answers. That’s when a lot of the funny and spontaneous moments happen!

Think Ron Burgundy from Anchorman – if you were to have a sign off from your own segment, what would it be?

From the land of music videos, celebrity oopsy daisies, and Joe Jonas, this is Vijaya Selvaraju reminding you to always want much more. *wink* Because that’s what we’ll give you Canada.
