Style Review: 2011 MTV Movie Awards

Posted by Maria Calderon on June 10th, 2011 - 1 Comment

While nothing beats the glamour of the Oscars when it comes to red-carpet style-watching, you can always count on the MTV Movie Awards to bring on the fun, hot, youthful trends for the summer. Fitted mini dresses, lots of metallics, and pretty rompers ruled the carpet at this year’s awards show.

Let’s start with the night’s “Generation Award” winner Reese Witherspoon whose fitted leopard mini-dress choice surprised me, as i’ve always usually brushed off her red-carpet looks as being a little… oh, on the boring side. The Zac Posen mini, however, was anything but – instead of the typical and often tacky gold/black combo, her leopard-print mini was black and gray, with a sweetheart neckline (so feminine!) and fit her just right, making her look youthful, fresh and elegant.

Now on to the bling: Metallics were a big trend at this year’s awards with celebs from Kristen Stewart to Leighton Meester donning pieces covered in shiny hardware. While I thought their dresses were ok, they were a little too much for my eyes (no hate mail please, Twi-hards) and I much preferred Mila Kunis’ subtle choice of a multi-coloured metallic skirt toned down with a simple black top. Paired with limited jewelry and pale pink pumps, the outfit was appropriately casual, fun and flirty.

Last, but not least, the romper trend was another favourite of the night with the young and the old(er), proving that this look can span all ages. Contrasting Cameron Diaz’s black romper pick, was 13 Year-old Elle Fanning’s pink Dolce & Gabbana belted romper. Covered in a floral print, the romper was sweet, pretty and just right for the summer.

What was your favorite MTV Movie Awards trend?

Jeffrey Campbell goes Fringe

Being that I’ve been purse obsessed lately (you should see the pictures of my new Tory Burch), I’m in need of sharing this immediately. Being a fan of Jeffrey Campbell Wedges (and admittedly not being able to purchase them for fear of walking in them all too tall), these purse offerings exclusive to Little Burgundy will most definitely not fall short of tall expectations. Triangle x square silhouettes have me at hello. Your take?

The New Beetle

Just when you may have thought that the Beetle couldn’t get any more modern/classic – here comes yet another iteration. Rich lush colours, appealing interiors, and full of bells and whistles. They call it the 21st Century Beetle. We’re just glad it’s here. The best part? The naturally built in smile that the VW Beetle seems to have – I can’t bear to take my eyes away. Shiny.

Reebok Easy Tone – Flaunt It!

Posted by Josette Blackwood on April 15th, 2011 - 1 Comment

I wanted to like the new Reebok Easytone Reeinspire IIs. I really did. But I didn’t. The claim is that the shoes will “tone and strengthen key leg muscles while you walk”, but they didn’t. There’s supposed to be a 28% improvement in the glutes, 11% in the thighs, and 11% in calves, but I’m skeptical.

As someone who works with a lot of heavy weight on my legs, and as a result has a pretty strong lower body (as it is my quote-unquote “problem area”), I want a product that makes claims like this to give me something I can feel. Even with the balance ball inspired soles, I didn’t find any difference between walking in the EasyTones and walking in my other workout shoe. Plus, those are more versatile as it isn’t recommended that you actually work out in these – just walk.

I understand that these are not supposed to be miracle workers, but rather a compliment to active living so I’m not writing them off completely (I’ll wear them to and from the gym and/or work).  It’s just that given all of the hype around this shoe, I was expecting a bit more. Perhaps someone who uses lighter weight on their lower half, or none at all would feel the benefit more.

That being said, Reebok Easytone apparel featuring tight (very tight) tops and bottoms that come equipped with “proprietary toning bands designed to tone key muscles and improve posture”, is better.  The clothing is designed to  “tone upper body muscles, improve posture and alignment, and tone key muscles in your legs and butt”. I cannot attest to that (clothing that tones? Really?) but the Play Dry fabric whisks moisture (aka sweat) away from skin, which is always nice (the drenched t-shirt after an extra tough work-out is not always a good look).

So, if you’re searching for a bit of extra help and want to look cute when building your summer body, give the apparel a try. The shoes I’d recommend for walks, and maybe a stroll on the odd occasion…but nothing further.

Leopard Leggings

Tell me honestly – I need to know. Can any ol girl pull off the leopard leggings? Is it far too much to ask for? Girl pictured is a model from YESStyle.com (yes, full rant and rave about them). I think with the way that she’s managed to tone down the print with her overall outfit…it’s pretty fair game. Let’s play.
