Q&A, Toronto Fashion, Up and Coming »
I recently sat down with Shawna Robinson, part owner of Toronto based label, LABEL – you like that don’t you? See the irony label lovers? Label is the name of the line owned by Robinson and her partner Natalie Sydoruk. The idea is that you see no Label. You define the clothes; the clothes don’t define you.
Have a look at the Q&A after the jump (and photos from the live photoshoot at Cheval).

I was just talking about plasticine animation with a co-worker yesterday, and this light hearted joy of a video came into my life. Well timed Sliimy, well timed. He slightly reminds me of MIKA. I guess we all have to make associations (it’s how we learn when dealing with something new).
Good music is good music – grand tune, check it out.

Evian’s always making waves (haha to that oh-so-witty pun) teaming up with Jean-Paul Gaultier for these limited edition bottles. It’s a stunning glass silhouette with crystals etched into it. I snagged two of these bad boys up as a welcome present to the Jet Cooper boys for their offices (more on that soon – I’m absolutely ecstatic about this upcoming mini-projecto).
Where’d I get them? Strangely enough, at Metro near where the fabulous Wynne Leung lives, and they were even on sale. Get them while you can – they’re not around …

Always dressing To The Nines is not an option – it’s a necessity. What better way to address that than with a line whose mantra is the same. Hailing from Van city, To The Nines Clothing is equal mix of skater/surf/snow, streetwear, and has the ability to cater to a punk and hip-hop fan base. Their first collection has launched for F/W 09 – mucho more to come from the brand.
The thing I’m diggin more about this is that the shirts have a bit more of a graphic element to …

This was the first year that I was invited to the TFI New Labels competition finale – unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it out but from the post coverage it looks like an absolutely incredible and inspiring showcase (I live for those). Four of Canada’s up and coming designers presented their collections to be judged for a $25,000 prize to kick start their lines. Held at the posh Carlu, the event looked to be a spectacular array of fashion influencers.
And the winner – Faren Tami of Faren, an eco-friendly …

Pushing and waiting is what they’re doing – goodboy clothing shows at Berkeley Church on Sunday May 3, 2009. Promising to be an entertaining time, they’ve got a full performance schedule, and from what I’ve seen, a strong casual wear offering for the coming season.
And hey, it’s always nifty to support local brands, non? Answer: Yes.

DITA DITA DITA. My love. Targas. I made a promise that I would buy one pair of sunglasses that were good quality (because they’re your eyes afterall) – the last ones I got were $5.00 from Kensington and they had this awful smell of fresh plastic reeking from them. That and the paint peeled incessantly. Oh, and they were the most unwayfarer like sunglasses ever (meaning they were fakey RayBs). Thinking back to all the money that I saved with buying cheap sunglasses over and over (not even going to …

Beautiful things come from Vancouver – and Elroy is absolutely no exception. I have this firm belief that sustainability in clothing is completely the new movement. So much so that it’s almost become the standard. And with standards come homogenous design, but not so with Elroy. I get quite a few emails that land in my inbox for brands, and this one completely had me taken. Crisp design, fresh materials, and angular / uncommon shapes. Beautiful. Most importantly – so utterly organic. Thank you Leanne Elroy for bringing to us …

Simple, modern, cool without trying too hard, fashion forward without being flashy… these were my initial thoughts when I first saw an ad for Adidas’s newest brand, SLVR. The best part of SLVR’s first collection are the sharp, structured silhouettes that somehow still manage to have a relaxed, casual feel to them. It seems like an oxymoron, but one need only look at SLVR’s hooded parka, biker jacket, or ribbed cardigan dress to understand. While each piece holds a distinct shape, it’s also clear that each allows the wearer ease …

Just une slight shoutout to ION Magazine – they’ve nabbed Lykke Li for the front cover of this month’s issue (pretty rad timing as she just did a great show in Toronto early February, and has been making waves with Aritzia as of late). Pick up a copy at your local hip spot (aka in Toronto that would be near every store down Queen West), or check it out online HERE.
