Psst, have you heard? It’s all about the good ol’ music festivals this summer (Bonnaroo, Electric Daisy, Digital Dreams, Summerfest just to name a few!). Who can say no to a guaranteed amazing combo of sunshine, thriving beats and even better company? In a sea of the fabulously dressed, it’s up to you to concoct a perfect mix of style and comfort. Sound intimidating? Not at all!  Especially if you follow my easy peasy tutorial as I adjust a simple black maxi dress courtesy of boohoo into a two piece set that’s both flirty and extremely functional. This DIY has been approved by the sewing challenged (me) so here we go!

I got my DIY kit filled with goodies from boohoo!

Step 1:

Head to your closest dollar store (Dollarama in my case) to pick up some thick black elastic bands and a couple packs of fake flowers preferably made from fabric for better stick. It’s completely up to you the colour and type of flowers you would like to rock.

Step 2:

Put on the dress and outline the shape of your bustier. Get ready to become an expert at ripping apart some tricky dollar store flowers in order to separate the petals. Once you’ve obtained a whole bunch, you can start gluing them directly onto the fabric. (Tip: Slip a piece of cardboard between the dress so the front and back don’t stick together)

Step 3:

Looks good already eh? For some spunk, position a few studs here and there in the center of the petals to make the flowers pop! Feel free to use jewels or sequins instead and always make sure the glue has dried completely before trying it on.

Step 4:

Put the dress on and mark how short you would like your crop top to be. It’s always safer to have it longer than desired because the fabric will be folded back to give the edges a cleaner finish.

Step 5:

Take the stretchy elastic and wrap it around your waist so that it’s a bit snug. This is the length you will cut off and use your dress’s waistband. Staple the ends to make a circle and flip the dress inside out. Carefully fold the fabric over the waistband and secure it with studs. You can choose to leave the excess fabric dangling in the back for some sexy skin exposure (wink wink, nudge nudge).

You’re finished! No needlework required at all. The light weight material of the dress makes it ultra breathable and super comfortable for your long hours in the sun. The top also goes sweetly with a high-waisted pair of denim shorts if maxi skirts aren’t your thing. No excuses now, so go get your summer lovin’ on with this new and improved maxi dress!
