This week Horrible Bosses opens in movie theatres – but loathing workplace superiors is a story that’s been told many times before. Most notably was the 1980’s hit movie starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda featuring a theme song that would play in the minds and hearts of anyone who’s ever had to pour themselves a cup of ambition to get their day started.
Like all memorable stories, sooner or later somebody will turn it into a musical. Despite a relatively short run on Broadway, 9 to 5; The Musical went on to secure several Tony nominations and is now on the road delighting hard working audiences in Toronto thanks to Aubrey Dan (Dancap Productions), followed by Minnesota and Texas.
To be honest, I didn’t really remember the movie, but that helped make opening night a little more exciting. Melodies of workplace frustration by the leading ladies struggling with sexism, lost love and a little bit of sexual harassment will keep your toes tapping and appeal to the feminist ninja in you.
Be sure to drop by Toronto Centre for the Arts before July 10th, just make sure you don’t bring your boss.
