Hey,
I came to this blog through a google search on Jacob as well.
I work at Jacob in a pretty busy mall and I don't agree with Lou's comment about the clothing. I watch countless women try on clothes all day, and although some women don't look good as good in the clothes as they would hope there isn't a certain size of women prescribred for the clothing. The trick is knowing what style of clothing looks good on you and what aize you actually are... (don't try and fit into a 4 if you're typically a 10.)
Personally I'm a 10 or 12 and I am in love with the clothes. Of course I'm aroudn the clothes all the time so it's hard not to want everything in the store... haha half my closet is from there.
but never hesistate to ask for help from the employees. I know, at my store atleast, the best part about our jobs is helping people put together outfits and get sizes for people... it's a lot bettet than hanging up clothes people so lovingly toss inside out on the floor of the dressing room on their way out.

You're right - they're much about the average sizes, not necessarily a good fit for anything above or below. I'm more about their tops and sweaters more than anything else!

Jacob fit is for smaller sizes. Their clothes look best on women wearing 0-5/6. It's unfortunate, but true. If you are thin figured, you will feel comfortable in most of the apparel. But, many pant styles and silk (or materials alike) tops fit horribly in all the wrong places, even if you are a 0.

Hey I just came across your blog! I know this entry is from a while back, but I really want to put my to cents in.
I used to work at Jacob a few years ago and it is my absolute favourite store until today! I buy most of my clothes there.
I have to agree that the fits are kinda weird for average sizes, but I am 5f11 and all my limbs are super long. Jacobs clothing fits me perfectly lenght-wise, something I can only find in ugly expensive speciality tall-girl stores. I think they cut their clothes to fit on tall models and then forget to adjust their lenghts for regular sized women. I saw this problem in dressing rooms time after time. But I donno, keep trying stuff until it is flattering. Half the stuff on the racks look 400% better once you put them on. Jacob is really a store where you need to p try on clothing you would never think of and then become plesantly surprised.
I like jacob because it is classic withouth making you old. Some stuff I bougth a few years ago still looks trendy and new. The materials they use are usually very good quality and last for a while. Some of it is even made in Canada!

I suggest that all you nay-sayers give jacob a try, for the same price you are getting better styled and higher quality clothing then any other mall stores! It is way better then Le Chateau. I try and convince my friends to go to Jacob...but yeah it doesnt have the best reputation...

Landed on this site from a google search on Jacob - I wanted to browse their new collection. I'm in my early 20s and looking to make the transition from "student-wear" to chic, business appropriate, and fashionable office-wear. I'm liking their new style but price and fit is definitely not the best.

Aw and I hope it's not the last time - thanks for the comment mel!

I've gone everywhere - suzy shier, vintage, h&m, hell, I've even gone to buy hilarious socks from an oldies store in the middle of nowhere. style over pricing and branding I say (though I'm not adverse to branded / designer items, not always). I say if payless looks good, go ahead and wear it! risks are the way to go - standing out is not a bad thing if you know how to do it well

I haven't yet written about thrift, but I definitely will look to! there's some great places on queen!

hope to see some more commenting action from you soon, thanks so much mel!

Hey! This is the first time I visit your blog. Quite interesting I must say. I just wanted to say that I was one of those "mall stores haters". That is why I understand you comment about GAP. But here's the thing: it doesn't matter where you shop or how "lame" a store looks from the outside, the important thing is that you give your personal touch to an outfit. How you accessorize it, your hairdo, shoes, even your make up will play a huge part on your overall look. I've had people asking me where I got certain garments just because instead of wearing them as the store recommended I mixed them with colorful tights, oversized necklaces, funky boots and hair accessories. I'm telling you, the result can be amazing. It doesn't matter if you can afford designer clothes, if you are not willing to take risks you will simply not stand out.
One more thing, since I'm new I don't know if you ever posted about thrift stores in Toronto. I'm also new to the city so I do not know any. It's amazing how many treasures you can find with a bit of patience.

I think it depends on what you go there for - I have to agree that the suiting isn't the most appropriate (nor the business oriented dresses) but I do like what they offer in terms of blouses, cardigans, and accessories. Jacob boutique isn't exactly up to speed in terms of fit for women, but I definitely think they're coming to terms with what the modern woman demands (as opposed to a store like the GAP).

Thanks for the comment!

Sorry, I can't disagree more. Every time I go into their store, enticed by monochrome window display, it fails to please aesthetics. They're good with basics, but the pieces never fit properly. Have you ever tried on a Jacob suit?
