leave the hiatus behind, trulylove.new.denim.

I’m back from the real world – exams have ended and I apologize for the delay in posts and fresh material. Following the conclusion of exams, I went shopping. Over and over again. Likely for three consecutive days, but I was so dazed at the end of it that I’m not sure how long it really was anymore.
I managed to relinquish my former overindulgence of denim. When I was in Grade 9, I bought my first pair of jeans of over $20.00 from Jean Machine. Ringing in at approximately $99.00 CAD for a pair of Silver Jeans bell buttons, I started a slow but steady inclination to purchasing nice denim. The new affixations for myself would be Rock and Republics (those paper-thin fiends), Seven for All Mankind (who even wants to dissect the meaning of that name), and the newest acquisition being True Religions.
The Julie Skinnies won the toss up against a pair of Citizens of Humanity (stop with the dramatic brand names). They’re a comfortable material, great fit, and despite my tongue-lashing about the pocket design making my backside look as if it was smiling, I grew a rare affection for these strange beauties. Is overpriced denim justified? I don’t know – you tell me (and boys, be nice.)

Overpiced denim justified? sure, if what you are paying for meets your perception of what a “quality” product is.
In my personal opinion, the “premium” denim scene (actually, premium PRICED denim would be more fitting) has got a bit out of hand with ridiculous brands popping up left and right. True Religion is probably one of my most hated brands, right along side Antik. With such ridiculous back pocket designs you basically are a walking bill board. The cuts, at least for men, are whack as hell! What straight male in their right mind would wear a flared joey cut? Though I have to give TR a bit of credit, they paid homage to vintage levis with their twisting seam designs… it still does not warrant a 300 dollar price tag. Might as well buy a pair of jeans from the gap as they yield the same production quality (if not even better) than a pair of TR’s.
Props to brands like Rag & Bone, Jean Shop, A.P.C., Acne, Julian Red, and the myriad of small Japanese companies who focus on quality for doing denim right.
Ouch! That comment hurt, seeing as I had just purchased these. I feel as if alot of the times people hate denim brands when they have become too mainstream (as if that Black Eyed Peas song didn’t do it enough). Premium PRICED is definitely right, but at the same time, it is not only the image that you project, but the way that the jeans make you feel (the fit is still superior to jeans from say, the GAP).
I like the controversy – but I’ll still wear them anyway.
Thanks for the comment!
I am definitely not a fan of Men’s TR, or most TR in general.
But the Julie cut. Sigh. How I love the Julie cut. They were the first and only pair of TR I own that actually fit me right.
What wash did you get?
one of the reasons i believe they become “high quality” is because of the fact that people take sooooooo much care of the jeans since it is worth sooooooo much. If eveeryone started to care for their normal jeans in that manner, almmost all jeans would become “high quality”. :D
But usually the people that criticize premium jeans are those that dont buy them,
(makes sense) but when they try and buy one, i think they all start to fall in love with them, must have some secret reason……or the price justifies ur mind to think it is worth it …. :O
I dont know…but it has ruined many of my friends bank accounts
I don’t love true religions either, but this pair of jeans fit great and I just really loved it – I think the quality is great in that the fit is a good material and it’s incredibly comfy and design!
superduperfriend – I didn’t realize that people would willingly go bankrupt from clothes – YEESH!
what jeans ARE good + worth it?
Thing is, in terms of denim and im sure many other products as well… being mainstream is usually positively correlated with lower production quality. I don’t hate mainstream brands, just the ones that cut corners to satisfy demand so that they can make an extra penny. There’s also a lot of marketing involved trying to get brands to appeal to the end consumer. I.e. celebrities wearing these high end denim brands to make them look high end. Fashion is interesting because its at a crossroad between art and business, there needs to be a balance just like everything else. Most mainstream brands tend to step too much into the business aspect.
Evisu is an example of a mainstream brand that I still admire. Most people dont even know what Evisu is all about, just that rappers wear it so it must be cool. Although the brand has been bastardized in North American with shitty ass european-made products, little do people know that Evisu in Japan has kept to its roots. Sticking to traditional denim production methods, Evisu japan is still the pinnicle of denim artisanship. They are still making denim so that people can wear denim like its meant to be worn, tough, rugged, and sturdy. You can even get handpainted backpocket gulls customized to your liking… a very cool service indeed.
ThatGirl, I fully agree with you about fit and feel. Fit is probably the top priority for me when I buy clothes. Its also cool to wear things that make you feel good about yourself. Just wanted to point out that there are lots of other great brands that don’t compromise on their product that have awesome fits and also the brand appeal.
If you want my recommendations for females, I like to to see girls wear some of the stuff I mentioned above. Rag & bone, A.P.C., Acne, April77, Superfine, and Jean Shop come to mind as brands that make great girls denim for the price.
oh and how can i forget earnest sewn =) this is the brand that the original creators of paper denim started. Yes… back in the day paper denim actually had pretty awesome stuff.
Earnest sewn! I was going to write about them awhile back but haven’t gotten around to it :D
Thanks so much – this is great material!
definitely justified. if you look as good as the model in the pic in those jeans, i’d buy you dinner. maybe a designer bag. straight up.
They’re justified only if they make you look like the model in the picture I guess haha..
I’m not at the point of putting up pictures of me wearing jeans that emphasize my butt, but maybe it’s time that I put up a picture of myself at all.
Good idea! Even if it wasn’t explicitly said (:
