Non-no Magazine

Want to learn how to dress? Well set aside your everyday newsstand fashion mag and pick up a copy of Japan’s Non-no. This magazine proves that the Japanese have fashion down to a science. Each colorful page is chock full of practical REAL-LIFE outfits that people actually wear. Don’t read Japanese you say? Well have no fear! At least 70% of the magazine is picture based – filled with street snaps and images of cool up-and-coming clothes. It is easily one of my favourite fashion resources. Only downside? It has a pretty hefty price tag (around $18 a copy) if you wish to obtain it here in Canada.

Get it at Pacific Mall or Sanko

I never understood the whole wave of japanese street fashion. Is it just because its so foreign and kitchy?

I wouldn’t generalize all Japanese street fashion into one big group and say people like it just because its foreign and Kitschy.

Brands like Mastermind Japan where their clothes are built on hype and high price points (I think $1000 for a studded t shirt? blah) is Kitsch. Current BATHING APE products I will consider as very Kitsch (Nigo fell off the map years ago). Many of the “Urban” Street brands I would consider to be Kitsch. Many kiddies buy em cus of the hype and exclusivity around em.

However, a lot of the stuff coming out of Japan is indeed amazing in terms of design and quality and far from being foreign and Kitschy. Street wear isn’t just the urbany stuff you see from time to time. I would categorize brands like Julius, Attachment, Viridi-Anne, Lad musician, N. Hoolywood as street wear as well - and I would argue that those designers go just a bit beyond just the pursuit of money. I buy them because the products are ingeniously made and fit better than any 90% of the brands out there.

Plus… the Japanese have a lot more style, creativity, and BALLS when it comes to clothing… I think thats why Japanese fashion is evolving so fast and thats why the popular styles in Japan are always 2-3 years behind in North America.

Perfect example is BAPE… it was cool in the 90s and early 2000’s… its just recently been popular overseas and has since run its course in the east.
