Piece by Piece: Cardigans
Part of a weekly issue, piece by piece will set out to create a timeless wardrobe for all occasions, piece by piece. It will introduce one article of clothing that is an essential part of any man’s closet.
First up is something that has been a part of how I present myself for the past two years: the quintessential cardigan. Once the realm of grandpa’s and Mr. Rogers, modern cardigans are slimmer, sleeker, and sexier. With every design house and a couple of lower end stores carrying them, there is absolutely no excuse to finding the perfect one for you, no matter what your price range is.
The GAP merino wool cardigan

While it is only 52% wool, something which significantly knocks down its material rating, the design is excellent. The soft coffee color creates an inviting feeling that’s bound to elicit hugs from others. The blue trim and front pockets add spice to what is normally a laidback piece of clothing. Plus, at less than $60, it’s hard to beat.
Mexx cotton/wool cardigan

Exclusion of high end materials such as cashmere and exotic wools knocks its materials rating down but the classic and clean design allows it flexibility to be paired with anything from a dress shirt to a tee shirt.
Ralph Lauren lambs wool cardigan

Made from 100% baby lambs wool, it is top notch material with a top notch price to match. Retailing at $425, the wool is soft and stitched with the high quality workmanship that is a trademark of RL. The design is a classic but eye popping plaid pattern which goes perfectly with a solid blue shirt such as the one in the image.
