It’s a busy streetcar after work, and I see two young musicians with their guitars and band equipment. I ask them if they’d like my seat but they politely decline. One of them strikes up a conversation and asks where I’m headed. I respond that I’m on my way to a charity gala that night supporting breast cancer and prostate cancer. He nods empathetically and goes on to share a story of a good friend who was recently diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer, and his pain of losing his father recently as well to the disease. We only talked for about five minutes but I was so surprised and touched at how open he was to sharing his story with me, a complete stranger to him only five minutes ago. It certainly put the night ahead of me into perspective.

I was honoured to have been invited to attend the Red and White Ball, an annual one night event bringing together Toronto’s young professionals to lend their support to a worthy cause. Since 2002, Red & White has been fully organized and operated by a talented group of 20 something volunteers that have raised more than $100,000 for Rethink Breast Cancer. For their 11th year, the team decided to also lend their efforts to support Prostate Cancer as well, with the appropriate title of “Red & White with a Kiss of Blue”.

With local artists selling one of a kind artwork, raffle prizes, candy bar, dance performances and a silent auction, there were plenty of ways for event attendees to support the cause at hand. My beautiful date and I, Sophia, enjoyed sampling the treats at the candy bar and mixing and mingling with other fellow supporters of the cause.
