The little black dress, or LBD, is a closet staple. Just look at the gorgeous Sheena from
The Uniform Project to see it’s versatility. For the fashion forward who read this blog, I know I’m preaching to the choir. Still, I couldn’t resist writing an ode to my fashion ‘bread and butter’ (sorry for the cliches, can’t be helped).
For as long as I can remember, the LBD and I have been very close. We have gone to parties, to work, to the bar, and even to meet ‘the parents’. It should really come as no surprise to those who know me, that I’m probably wearing a black dress. I’m wearing one as I write this! As a LBD affectionado I know that not all black dresses are made equal. I’ve come to learn that there are three major categories of black dresses. That when coupled with a little creativity, results in the ability to canvas ALL occasions.
1) THE POSH (tube/sexy/tight)
Anything sexy, tight, slinky, and generally ‘hot hot hot’ would fall into this category. I like to think of it as ’the Posh Spice’ pre-Victoria Beckham. The exactline in the Spice World movie was, ‘the little gucci dress, the little gucci dress, OR the little gucci dress’. I can’t blame her though, I’d wear the little gucci dress!
2) THE HOLLYGOLIGHTLY (boat neck/conservative/preppy)
Timeless, classy, and elegant. Inspired by the one and only Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
3) THE OLSEN (casual/American Apparell/ Urban Outfitters)
Pretty much anything casual, cut-out, baggy, or hipster-y. Think of it as a ‘this is my running errands’ black dress and you’ll likely find something. Random note, is it just me, or do the Olsen twins ALWAYS seem to be getting groceries or starbucks?
Anyway, I own more than a couple of black dresses in each said category. But I cannot help my attraction to the simplicity, timelessness and practicality of a great LBD. So cheers to little black dresses everywhere and may they always be the perfect canvas to experiment with jewellery, amazing shoes and keep us ladies looking oh so chic.
