Toronto Fashion Incubator - Barbie and New Labels

The Toronto Fashion Incubator is once again hosting the New Labels Fashion Design Competition, and this year the event is getting all dolled-up thanks to a sponsorship with Barbie.

TFI’s New Labels is a national competition for fashion designers looking to make it big in Canada’s Fashion Industry. (Past winners include Joeffer Coac, the lovely Ashley Rowe and David Dixon) Among their many challenges, designers will have to create three little black dresses inspired by Barbie’s iconic style.

The competition is capped off by ELLE Canada’s benefit fundraiser for TFI, a posh party being held at the Carlu on April 24, 2010. Judged by some of the most influential people in the fashion industry (last year’s judges included Rita Silvan and David Dixon), the winner will receive a prize package valued at over $25,000 from ELLE Canada.

So what else is Barbie bringing to the table? Well aside from being some serious fashion inspiration (who didn’t want to wear Barbie’s clothes when they were younger…or now?), Mattel is also presenting the winner with a $10,000 cash prize.

So get going! Dig out that perfectly polished plastic doll and start designing – competition closes November 24th.

I’m still trying to get over the fact that Barbie has become so diverse! Wooot!

Wowie! What kinds are in your collection? For some reason I wasn’t never huge on the plastic dolls, but I love the concept of when it’s brought to things like makeup and clothing. Interesting partnerships!

HOLY SHITZZZ! IS THAT BARBIE DIVERSITY UP THERE?!?! I AM FLOORED. I AM QUITE IMPRESSIVE. :P Yeah, I know there will always be criticism about Barbie, but hey, I like their concept of “Barbie, Little Black Dress, and You” and how all 12 dolls model DIFFERENT black dress styles, etc. :]
